The King James Text with the Explanatory Notes of John Wesley

John Wesley

For two and a half centuries John Wesley's Explanatory Notes upon the New Testament have been read with a Bible held in the other hand. This edition gathers the two into one: the King James text of St. Matthew is printed in full, and beneath each verse stands Wesley's note upon it, so that Scripture and commentary are read together.

What sets this edition apart is its apparatus. Wesley built his Notes by quietly abridging the best learning of his age — Bengel above all, with Doddridge, Lightfoot, Poole, and others. Here each chapter closes with a critical apparatus that traces, note by note, where his comments came from — and, as tellingly, where they are his own.

With a series and volume introduction, the full apparatus, and indexes of sources, of Scripture cited, and of subjects.
