Her name is spoken in the Canon of the Mass, where it has stood for some fifteen centuries. She died at Catania in the persecution under Decius, about the year 251 — a girl who refused a consul and was broken for it.
This volume gathers what the Church preserved of her: the early Acts of her passion, an anonymous Greek recension, the polished retelling of Simeon Metaphrastes, the long oration of Methodius of Constantinople, the history of her body's return from Constantinople, two collections of her miracles, and the hymns sung on her feast. Each is a distinct work by a distinct hand, some separated by centuries.
